Raavanan is a trilingual movie directed by Mani Ratnam. It has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vikram donning the lead roles.

The storyline of Raavanan is so similar to the epic Ramayana.

While the Ramayana is based on Raavana’s sister Soorpanaka being insulted by Rama and Lakshmana by chopping off her nose, in Raavana, it is the death of the sister (played by Priyamani) that leads to the abduction of Aishwarya.

The Raavanan team has planned an event in the Lady Andal School in Chennai. It may either be a press meet or an interaction.

After over a decade, this movie will see Prabhu and Karthik together on screen. It may be recalled that their combination in Agni Natchathram, which was again directed by Mani Ratnam, still remains evergreen in our memories.

Bollywood star Govinda plays Prabhu’s role in the Hindi version.

A wolf was specially flown down by a chartered plane from the US for a particular scene in the film.

Another director in 'Yudham Sei'

Mysskin is very innovative in all things he does for his films. For 'Yudham Sei' he changed the look and guise of usual Cheran to that of a CBI officer. Then he roped in the popular TV host Rose to do an important role. Now he has made another director an actor in ‘Yudham Sei’.

Director Marimuthu burst on the scene with the film 'Kannum Kannum' which told the story of a lover who turns brother to his love due to circumstances. Marimuthu plays the second officer to Cheran in ‘Yudham Sei’. But the unit is keeping the colour of his character under wraps for their own good reasons.

Tamannah never looks back

Tamannah is one bold heroine who says she never wants to look back at things that are finished and over. She is different among heroines who keep on preferring to ride on one successful film for many months after.

She says she fells happy doing a film like 'Sura' but also maintains she is not bothered to know about how it is performing. "I look forward to my next film once I finish one. I don’t like to post mortem a film after it is released", says the top heroine.

On her role in ‘Sura’ which is introduced in a rather peculiar way as she is trying to end her life for her lost dog Tamannah admits that the role is not like hers in real life. In real like she says she is very bold.

‘Endhiran’ on schedule

SURIYA-KARTHI SIBLING RIVALRY

When two siblings enter filmdom, especially if they are brothers, there is bound to be some comparison. And when one of them is an established star while the other is trying to find a place in the film industry, the comparison meter would be higher.

Perhaps, Karthi must also be in the same situation where he is compared to his brother Suriya. When a reporter questioned if he ever feels uncomfortable or irritated by this comparison, Karthi replied that it is not the case. Karthi added that when he completes a film, he is keen to move on to the next project and will not think what Suriya is up to. He clarified that there is no sibling rivalry between them.

NAYAN’S GORGEOUS MOM

Nayanthara is the leading lady in the Malayalam film Electra. The shooting of this movie is going on in full swing. There is also a buzz in the film industry that the lady rejected several offers to be a part of this off beat film, which is directed by Shyam Prasad.

Raavanan – Mani Speak

TEN HEADS
TEN MINDS
A HUNDRED VOICES
ONE MAN

Did such a man ever exist?

Was' he Just a myth... or does he live even today...?

What is the line that divides Good from Evil..?

Does our understanding change when we look from the opponent's perspective...?

The bond between the hunter and the Hunted between the Captor and the Captive seems to be a bond of do or die... The tension between opposites often seems so electric, that it isolates them from the rest of the world, leaving just the two - All alone...

Are Ten Heads better then one...?

Is there a Ram inside Raavanan?

And a Raavanan inside each of us?

RAAVANAN is not a story. It is a world.

The magnum opus of Mani Ratnam will hit the screens in June.

'Sivappu Mazhai' banned in Sri Lanka

‘Sivappu Mazhai’ the Tamil movie that found a mention in the Guinness Book of Records, for everything from penning the script to the final product done in 12 days, in banned in Sri Lanka.

‘Sivappu Mazhai’ is an appealing film that touches the pains and sufferings of the hapless Eezham Tamils at the hands of Srilankan army and the government. It revolves around a young man Suresh Joachim, a Lankan youth affected by the army kidnaps Meera Jasmine, a Minister's daughter and a television journalist meet his demands.

Debutant director V Krishnamurthy has handled this sensitive plot very skillfully.

From Chennai to China via Singapore, Switzerland

Hunting foreign locations to shoot a film has been always a tough job of the directors all along. Once just crossing the border was great fun for film makers. In the 50s and 60s going to Bombay or Kashmir itself was a great achievement which could generate good publicity for the film.

The breezy entertainer ‘Then Nilavu’ was much talked for its Kashmir locations. For ‘Sabash Mapillai’ even MGR was happy to shoot in Bombay city. Until the 70s going to Kashmir or Shimla was the greatest achievement.

But when ‘Ulagam Sutrum Valiban’ came in 1973 there was a paradigm shift. Nobody until then had thought one could bring beautiful foreign countries so well in our cinema. The way the film captured the beauty of the south Asian nations and the very difficult to shoot expo in Japan is still a bench mark for shooting in foreign locales. Ironically ‘Sivantha Mann’ released in 1969 was the first major film to go exotic. It was sot in Europe but somehow the film did not create an impact as the MGR film which came four years later did. After this Singapore and Malaysia became the hot destinations of our film makers. But most of them went ‘foreign’ only for the songs sequences.

After ‘Ulagam Sutrum Valiban’ the film that captured the imagination of the viewers was ‘Priya’ in 1978. After ‘Priya’ not many Kollywood films made its foreign locations as their USPs except a few like ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’. ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’ did become a genuine film shot over seas as the entire story was happening in Singapore and so the visuals were catchy. Even some ‘bhakthi’ films like ‘Varuvan Vadivelan’ and ‘Thai Mookambikai’ rode on the foreign locations for publicity. That was a time we Indians looked at even the skyscrapers in awe.

Then after a long time director created a sort of record in going to foreign locales. Shankar’s ‘Jeans’ made a mark in 1992. Shankar’s ‘Jeans’ is a record for shooting in maximum number of foreign locations for a single film. Having the influential Hollywood producer Ashok Amritraj at the back Shankar brought the best of America in ‘Jeans’. From Las Vegas to California and the Grand Canyon in Arizona, ‘Jeans’ is one of the best films pleasing the eyes. ‘Jeans’ was also shot in locations like the Valley of Fire, Manhattan Beach, Malibu Lake, Venice Beach, New Jersey and New York World Trade Center.

The highlight of the film was picturising the wonders of the world in the song ‘Poovukkul Olinthirukkum’ which dubbed Aishwarya Rai as the eighth wonder of the world. The song featured Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Empire State Building, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the Eiffel Tower.

Later when film makers were trying to be different they found foreign locales may camouflage a weak script and started looking to go to a foreign location at the drop of a hat. So even if the lead characters are poor and live in a barren village fighting to survive in life they go to Switzerland to sing and dance in their dreams. European countries particularly Switzerland had enough in Tamil.

In his ‘Anniyan’ Shankar shot the song "Kumari" in the Tulip gardens in Amsterdam. In ‘Kannum Kannum Nokiya' song Shankar used Petronas Tower, Kuala Lumpur. In ‘Boys’ he used the Lavender Gardens in New Zealand for the “Ale Ale” song. By this time almost all the film makers went out of India to shoot their songs. The best one to capture the modern Malaysia is Ajith’s ‘Billa’. Malaysia never looked more beautiful than in ‘Billa’.

Now film makers are tired of Europe and South Asia. They rake their brains to find locations un-explored. They even have specialists to guide them. Susi Ganesan found Mexico to suit ‘Kanthaswamy’. The song “Mambo Mamiya” was shot in a famous bull ring in Mexico. Gautham Menon went to Malta Islands for ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’. The pristine beauty of Malta is fresh. K V Anand is the new maverick director who flies more often. He shot ‘Ayan’ predominantly in both South Asia and Africa. “Nenje Nenje” song was shot in the Namib Desert in Namibia.

Of late in their search for never seen before locations China is fancied more these days. K V Anand has completed a schedule in China for his upcoming film ‘Ko’ starring Jeeva and Karthika. He is planning to go again. Action King Arjun starrer ‘Vallakottai’ is also going to the Red Land. Its director A. Venkatesh is planning a lot to do in China. ‘Vallakottai’ team wants to film a song at the colourful rally conducted during an expo every year in Beijing. Also there will be many action scenes filmed in China considering the action king plating the hero.

And the latest addition to China fans list is director A R Murugadoss. He along with Suriya-Shruthi Haasan and team will take off to China to shoot for his next film.

There are 194 recognised countries in the world today. There may be many more waiting for recognition. Our film makers will continue to strive to be the first to shoot in a never-before -gone country. And we the viewers are more than happy to watch the visuals which otherwise be missed in this life time. All said and done the beauty of a foreign locale lies in the adept handling of the script by its creative director. So always remember to take a story along with when going abroad for a film. Story is mightier than a sky scraper and lighter than your baggage.

Helen Mirren: 'Awards Are Wonderful ... But They Are Not the Main Course'

Dearest Liz,

After much rushing, finishing my husband’s film, promoting my book in New York, and then enduring six-hour costume fittings here in Germany, and shooting the first week of a fabulously emotional role as Tolstoy’s wife, I finally have a moment with my computer to answer your questions, so here goes …

LIZ: Did you have more fun at the Academy Awards this year or last year when you won for "The Queen"?

HELEN: Last year at the Academy Awards was probably the best night of my life and I floated on a cloud; nothing could be better than that! Having said that, the "Dame in Red" had a grand time this year, the highlight being the honor of presenting an Academy Award to my countryman [Daniel Day-Lewis], and one of the film world’s greatest actors.

LIZ: How does it feel now to have the Oscar, the Golden Globe awards, several Emmys, the BAFTA awards, the SAG awards and everything else all behind you for your great efforts in "Prime Suspect," "The Queen" and "Elizabeth I"? Where do you keep these things? Can you now rest on your laurels and your neat little behind?

HELEN: Darling Liz, who gets everything else right, my behind is neither neat nor little. However, you know awards are wonderful things to receive, a delicious dessert at the end of a dinner, but they are not the main course. They have to find the right place both in the home and in your professional life. In the home they should never be center, front of the mantelpiece, and in your professional life likewise.

Mine are actually spread around a bit, between L.A. and London, where Taylor and I also have a home. My Oscar is in London, I think at the moment standing halfway up the stairs. He tends to move around a bit, and I suspect has struck up a "Bronnie" relationship with the SAG "Actor" I also have in London.
(I hope you have watched "Make Me a Supermodel" to understand a Bronnie relationship!)

LIZ: You are finishing up playing a madam of a whorehouse in Nevada in "Love Ranch." What’s the difference in being a royal queen and a royal prostitute?

HELEN: Not much! Both are the CEOs of their realm. Our queen of Britain has far more constrictions on how she behaves, but in the end, people are people, and our job as actors is to reveal their humanity.

Anushka to frighten again

Anushka to frighten again
It seems Anushka is the first choice of Tollywood films when it comes to playing ethereal characters.

First she frightened the audience with ‘Arundhathee’ and then she was signed by Larencce to play the ghostly character in Muni-Part II.

Now we hear even director P. Vasu who is remaking his Kannada blockbuster ‘Aaptha Rakshaka’ in Telugu with Venkatesh has also gone for Anushka to play the supernatural heroine. But this one is a different joint. It was the Bollywood Anushka Varma who was the first choice for Vasu. But the delay in her giving commitment made him move towards Anushka.

Whatever it may be Anushka will do some shock treatment to all for some more time.

Bala

Bala has changed a lot. That’s what friends in his close circle say. Usually Bala doesn't think of his next film when he is working on one. He won’t even think of two story lines at onetime. But Bala has changed a lot.

Bala has decided his next film even as ‘Avan Ivan’ is still shooting and that will be with Vikram. It is going to be a real quickie in Bala's time machine. He has promised Vikram that he will complete it in eight months flat.

To accomplish that Bala has already deputed two of his assistants who worked with him ‘Naan Kadavul’ to prepare the first version of the script suiting Vikram. He has briefed them his ideas and put them in a hotel to complete the first draft before he finishes ‘Avan Ivan’.

Vikram is also excited to join his director who got him his first national award for best actor with ‘Pithamagan’. Vikram is likely to take up this film after the one with Boopathi Pandian.

Sivappu Mazhai Movie Review Print E-mail this Sivappu Mazhai - Sensitive yet sensible

'Sivappu Mazhai', according to its makers, is the first Tamil movie to find a place in the Guinness Book of Records, for everything from penning the script to coming up with the final product to be done in 12 days.

The film directed by debutant V Krishnamurthy features Canadian actor, producer and multiple Guinness World Record-holder Suresh Joachim as hero while Meera Jasmine dons a pivotal role.

What is interesting is that the film is a daring attempt to throw light on the sufferings of hapless Tamils in Sri Lanka. To put it in a nutshell, it is a sensitive theme but deftly handled.

Seemingly 'Unnaipol Oruvan' meeting 'Kannathil Muthamittal', the movie revolves around Nandhan (Suresh Joachim), a Lankan youth who kidnaps Meera Jasmine, a Minister's daughter and a television journalist.

The Minister (Suman) is helped by the Director General of Police (Rajeev) and his subordinate (Bose Venkat) to rescue Meera. Things take a turn when they get an interesting demand from Nandhan seeking the release of a Lankan national detained by police. Why and for what the demand is forms the crux.

Suresh plays a decent role though it seems to be his maiden venture on screen. Meera Jasmine plays her part well though she appears briefly in the film. Rajeev, Bose Venkat and Suman have utilised the opportunity well. Vivek fails to tickle the funny bone. The minute details on Lankan camps have been worked out well. Deva has composed a couple of tunes while the re-recording is average.

Raavan’s Hindi Songs Listing

The Mani Ratnam – A R Rahman duo are back. Known for their glorious combination, the music in ‘Raavan’ will definitely have to be watched out.

Starting from ‘Roja’ till ‘Guru’ Rahman has been giving his mentor the best of his tunes.

Recall the evergreen songs from ‘Bombay’ and ‘Dil Se’, Rahman has not let Mani Ratnam down.

The track listing for the Hindi version of ‘Raavan’ goes like this – Beera Beera sung by Vijay Prakash and Mustafa with additional vocals by Keerthi Sagathia. The second song is Behene De by Karthik and additional vocals by Mohammed Irfan. Subsequent songs are Thok de Killi by high voltage singer Sukhwinder Singh and Am’nico, Ranjha Ranjha by Rekha Bharadwaj, Javed Ali and additional vocals by Anuradha Sriram. Khilli Re by Reena Bharadwaj and backing vocals by Dr. Narayanan, Naresh Iyer, M. Kuldeep, Shwetha Mohan, Gopika Purnima, Subhiksha, Sri Madhumita , and finally Kata Kata by Ila arun, Sapna Awasthi, Kunal Ganjawala with backing vocals by Suzanne d'Mello, Sujatha Majumdar, Nikitha Nigam, Dilshad Shaikh, R.N. Iyer, Arun Ingle, Chintamani Sohoni and Gowtham Bharadwaj

Undoubtedly one can presume the songs to be world class and Rahman would have lived up to the expectations of his fans.

While the audio launch of ‘Raavan’ is on April 24th, the trailers on television are already creating a lot of expectations among the audience. Grab your copy when the audio is released.

Many Stars but one movie

Just imagine somebody remaking ‘Sholay’ with Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasn playing Amitabh and Dharmendra? Or our own ‘Thirisoolam’ remade with Sarath Kumar as the father and Vijay and Ajith as the two sons. Wow! Isn’t it? Kollywood has many talented actors and surprisingly they are very reluctant to come together for a single film. Actors are ready to play cameos but still not ready to do a parallel role with another hero. Why is that so?

In Hollywood and Bollywood we have seen great actors coming together for one film. The great stars were and are always ready to come together for a good script irrespective of their age and experience.

From Marlon Brando, Al Pacino to Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery to Richard Gere, Tom Cruise to Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp the list is never-ending. Films like A Few Good Men, Godfather, Catch me if you can, Departed are made more memorable also because of the perfect casting possible.

Even in Hindi cinema actors from Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra to the present Abhishek, Ajay Devagan to Salman Khan, Shahruk Khan and Saif all the saleable heroes have no second thoughts in accepting multi-starrers. Film like Sholay, Shaan, Saudaagar, Mohabbatein and many more were possible only with the ego less professionals.

But in Tamil multi-starrer films are rarer than one could imagine. Not just now, but even in those days the top two in the number game have never worked together. If you ask anybody which is the first multi-starrer film in Tamil, invariably most of the people would answer ‘Koondukili’. In theory they may be right as film admirers. But technically the may not be completely right as that was the time when the concept of super stars were emerging. Even when the triumvirate dominated Tamil cinema in the sixties we could see only Gemini Ganesan and SS Rajendran share screen space with other biggies. Even here while SSR managed with both MGR and Sivaji, the other Gemini Ganesan could do just one film ‘Mugarasi’ with MGR in his entire career.

After that the notable multi-star combination in Tamil was that of Rajini and Kamal. If you look closely even this pair broke after they both achieved individual stardom. Most of the Rajini’s early films before turning a solo hero were with Kamal Haasan. Apoorvaragangal, Moontru Mudichu, Avargal, Aadu Puli Aatam, 16 Vayainiley and Ilama Oonjaladugirathu. During this period even Kamal wasn’t a super star but was ahead of Rajini.

When Kamal and Rajini decided on the sets of ‘Ilamai Oonjaladukirathu’ not to work together again and make a separate career nobody could foresee the future. This important decision had its own pros and cons. But for the film buffs cons were more. Apart from a few cameos they both last came together for their mentor K. Balachander in ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’. In the middle when Ramanaidu was planning the multi-starrer ‘Thanikattu Raja’ Kamal was approached and he politely refused reminding them the decision he and Rajini took. Kamal and Rajini later combined with actors like Karthik, Prabhu but not with the likes of Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj. In the Hindi film ‘Geraftaar’ Kamal and Rajini worked together but there was no single combination shot in the three hour long film.

After Rajini-Kamal the super stardom did not belong to any two but there were many takers. Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Karthik, Sarath Kumar all of them had their share at different time. Of these Prabhu is the one who did more multi starrer than others. He and Sathyaraj had a few successful films together like ‘China Thambi Periya Thambi’ and ‘Palaivana Rojakkal’.

Vijayakanth and Prabhu did their only film together ‘Kaalaiyum Neeye Maalayum Neeye’. ‘Guru Sishyan’ and ‘Dharmathin Thalaivan’ with Rajini, ‘Vetri Vizha’ with Kamal. Prabhu was seen here there with all the people. Others in their initial stages of their solo career didn’t mind but once they started having their own fan following they strictly preferred to go on their own.

When we talk about multi-starrer films remember we are talking about popular main stream actors sharing significant screen space with another equally popular actor. Not just guest roles or cameo appearances.

So what is stopping Kollywood actors from coming together?

Gautham – Murugadoss to work for Hollywood Studios

Gautham Menon and Murugadoss have been hand picked by reputed Hollywood production houses to make films for them in India.

According to reliable sources, a Hollywood production house has signed a deal with Gautham to produce four films in a year for it. Gautham who appreciates talent and people is said to offer the chances to young up coming directors under his supervision. Gautham Menon who is in the final schedule of his film starring his assistant Veera is gearing up to shoulder something big and deserving.

Similarly Warner Brothers has signed Murugadoss as its south Indian representative and asked him to make four films in a year for them. Arun Vijay with Mohanlal?

Talks were buzzing around that Suriya would be part of an action flick with Mohanlal directed by Major Ravi. But looks like, Arun Vijay will replace Suriya.

Major Ravi, the man behind ‘Aran’ with Mohanlal and Jeeva, is back with another soldier flick. Sources reveal that it could be based on the Kandahar Hijack escapade, but nothing is confirmed yet.

It was initially speculated that Suriya would act with Mohanlal in this bi-lingual but sources reveal that Arun Vijay has been chosen to act with Lal Ettan. But Arun Vijay is yet to confirm his position. The project is already making rumble with the cast that includes Bollywood super star Amitabh Bachchan.

Major Ravi, is an ex-service man who likes to deal with movies related to the army, soldiers and patriotism. Sources say that this untitled movie will also be on the same lines packed with lot of action. Saavdhaan!

Aishwarya Dhanush wants to go solo

Aishwarya Dhanush who assisted Selvaraghavan in ‘Aayirathil Orivan’ feels she is now ready to direct a film independently. Aishwarya was also all ready to work under Shankar when ‘Endhiran’ started. But Yatra got unwell and she put family before ‘Endhiran’. But both the directors – Shankar and Selvaraghavan – were surprised to see the discipline and dedication of Aishwarya when she takes up some work. Selvaraghavan was very impressed with the way Aishwarya worked for ‘AO’.

Now Aishwarya is ready to go on her own and even got the script ready. Dhanush has shown the script to his good director friends Vettrimaran and Mithran Jawahar and they suggested some improvements. Accordingly the script was changed. With the most important scripting part done Aishwarya is concentrating on other parts of production.

The new venture is said to be a romantic comedy and so ‘Thamizh Padam’ Shiva or ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’ Vishnu may get the chance to work under Aishwarya. Vijay Antony is being considered for music. As everything is moving at the required speed Aishwarya may start her film as soon as her sister Soundarya’s marriage is over.

Sigappu Rojakkal: By Generation Next

Shruthi Haasan is said to be working in a remake of her father Kamal Haasan’s super hit movie ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, and guess who’s directing it?

The original ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’ was directed by Bharathi Raja and sources say the modern version of the same story will be made by his son, Manoj. Getting to further details, sources reveal that Shakthi will play the hero alongside Shruthi.

While Shruthi is busy with her music career and Telugu projects, Shakthi is awaiting his release of ‘Aattanayagan’. All in all, looks like its generation next in Kollywood, with director Manoj and Shruthi working in one of the super hits, their respective fathers worked together.

Simbu ropes in P C Sriram

Top cinematographer P C Sriram will weild the camera for Silambarasan’s ‘Vaaliban’, say sources in the know. The ace technician agreed to work for the film impressed by the storyline and Silambarasan’s approach, it is said.

A longtime project of the ‘Young Superstar’, ‘Vaaliban’ was getting delayed due to various reasons. “However, the success of ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ has made Silambarasan, the actor-director of the movie, to revive it,” sources add.

Produced by S S Chakravarthy of NIC Arts, the film is a youthful story with a patriotic theme, we learn. “It is about a youngster going the whole hog to save the unity and integrity of the country. The film will be racy from the word go,” sources say.

Music for ‘Vaaliban’ will be scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Silambarasan had earlier directed ‘Vallavan’ and assisted in the making of ‘Manmadhan’. He also helped Gautham Vasudev Menon on the sets of ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’.

Goundamani in hospital

Veteran comedian Goundamani was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai after he developed chest pain late Monday night.

According to circles close to the actor, he complained of uneasiness in breathing and chest pain. Following this, he was taken to the hospital from his Teynampet residence where a special team of doctors attended on him.

Film personalities and the actor's relatives rushed to the hospital after getting news about Goundamani's ailment. Doctors attended on him said the actor is doing well and will be discharged soon.

The popular actor, who set new standards in earthy comedy, has worked with all leading stars of Tamil cinema, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. He has acted in over 300 films in a career spanning over three decades.

‘Samiyar matter’ in ‘Guru Sishyan

Real life incidents and controversies occupying a place in films is nothing new in Kollywood. Cashing in on the latest ‘Nithyananda scandal’ is ‘Guru Sishyan’, a film directed by Shakthi Chidambaram with Sundar C and Sathyaraj in lead roles.

According to sources, some new scenes, taking a comical dig at the issue, were shot and added to the movie, which is expected to hit screens soon. “Those scenes would tickle the funny bones of the audience to a great extent,” sources add.

However, Shakthi Chidambaram has denied that they had made a spoof on the infamous issue. “It is true that ‘Guru Sishyan’ has scenes on fake godmen. But they were not inspired by the Nithyananda clippings. We had planned it much earlier.”

Produced by Shakthi Chidambaram himself, ‘Guru Sishyan’ brings together for the first time Sundar and Sathyaraj. Shruthi is playing the heroine while Santhanam is taking care of comedy portions, besides the two lead actors.

Venkat Prabhu’s ‘Poochandi’ with Premji, Shiva

Venkat Prabhu has finalised his next project. And he has named it too. Titled ‘Poochandi’, the film produced by T Siva of Amma Creations will have Premji and Shiva in lead roles.

“Chennai 600028 talked about gully cricket while Saroja is a thriller. And my third venture ‘Goa’ is a film for the youth. But all the three movies had comedy as a common point. ‘Poochandi’ too will have enough importance for comedy,” says the director.

Adding more, he says, “At the same time, ‘Poochandi’ will touch a different subject which I had not attempted so far. The backdrop will be entirely new and the film will have many surprises to the audience.”

Circles close to the filmmaker say two actresses will be roped in as heroines for the film which will go on floors by May. Venkat’s brother and lucky mascot Yuvan Shankar Raja will be the music director for ‘Poochandi’ too, while cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan.

Rahman to bring out coffee table book

R Rahman is attempting something which no music composer in Tamil cinema has perhaps not tried so far. The Oscar and Grammy winner will soon bring out a coffee table book, showcasing his work and colleagues from ‘Roja’ to ‘Raavan’.

Renowned photographer and director of K M C Conservatory backed by Rahman, T Selvakumar, has begun shooting for the book, which will feature new photographs of the Mozart of Madras and musicians who had worked with him so far.

The book will also have some pages dedicated to Sridhar, a sound engineer very close to Rahman who is no more, we learn. Says Selvakumar, “We are conducting a fresh photo shoot and no old photographs will be used.”

The book, to be published by Rahman Foundation, is expected to be released by the end of 2010. “Rahman is keen on the project because he wants to place on record singers and others who had worked with him, whom he thinks as the secret of his success,” sources say.

U.S. sees improved relations with Pakistan

"No government on earth has received more high-level attention," Ambassador Richard Holbrooke on Sunday told CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" of the dozens of visits by top U.S. officials to their counterparts in Pakistan.
"All of this, plus the recognition that the distinction between Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Taliban -- if it ever existed -- is eroded, has led the Pakistanis to take a very much more forward leaning position," Holbrooke said. "Plus, above all, the backlash from the (Taliban's) attacks in places like Lahore or Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Kashmir, Karachi, have all contributed to an evolution."
Holbrooke attributed recent Taliban arrests to increased communication between the two governments.
He cited the arrest of the Taliban's No. 2 official, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, as evidence of Pakistan's evolution from a country on the verge of collapse to a more stable political system now.

P.C.Sriram joins hands with Simbu

‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ has brought in marked changes in the way Silambarasan was looking at life. After working with Gautham Menon, Silambarasan wants to ensure he brings in a sophisticated class act in everything he does.

So he voluntarily approached the master of lights PC Shriram to work for him in his directorial venture ‘Vaaliban’. PC Shriram is very selective in accepting new projects and never accepts work for new directors. But Silambarasan managed to convince the veteran and how?

Siilambarasan went to PC Sriram and said that he is a great fan of Sriram’s photography and is dying to work for a film by him. Moved by Simbu’s sincere request the camera legend agreed to do the film even before asking for the story. PC Sriram whose earlier commitment ‘24’ by Vikram K. Kumar was dropped also had the time.

Nadhiya in Myskin direction

Nadhiya’s re-entry in Tamil had been as successful as her entry as a fresher 25 years ago. The new ‘Kollywood Beautiful Mom’ is a much in demand to play matured powerful roles. After the grand success of M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi in 2004, Nadhiys was flooded with offers. But she preferred family more and did not accept any. Later Nadhiya was seen in Thamirabarani with Vishal and Sanda with Sunder. C. Nadhiys’s last film in Tamil was the critically acclaimed Pattalam.

Now Nadhiya has accepted an offer from Myskin to play an important character in his forth coming film with Cheran. Cheran plays a CBI officer and Nasser will pair with Nadhiya. A young pair is also finalized but will only be revealed at the time of going to shoot.

Similarly Myskin is also introducing a new music director by the name of Kay to Kollywood. The first schedule of shooting will start on March 28.

amuthirakani with ‘Kurumbu’ Naresh

Recollect director Vishnu Vardhan’s first movie ‘Kurumbu’ and the tall hero in the movie – Naresh. Allari Naresh as he is called in neighbouring Tollywood is working in Tamil and this time with ‘Nadodigal’ director Samuthirakani.

Though ‘Kurumbu’ received a luke-warm response from the audience in Tamil, Naresh is a successful comic hero in Telugu. He was also part of ‘Shambo Shiva Shambo’ the Telugu remake of ‘Nadodigal’. Sources say Samuthirkani was impressed with Naresh’s performance and decided to work with him in his next Tamil project.

If the project comes to shape, ‘Allari’ Naresh would be in an elite group that works in both the Tamil and Telugu industries.

Maddy recommends Ajith, Vijay and Vikram

“Ajith, Vijay and Vikram will be the right choices to play the lead roles if ‘3 Idiots’ is remade in Tamil,” says Madhavan, one of the lead players of the Hindi hit, directed by Rajkumar Hirani.

Saying he has turned down an offer to repeat the act in Tamil, he adds, “Because, I had already given my heart and soul to the character I played in the Hindi version. So I don’t think it will be interesting if I do the Tamil remake too.”

On suggesting Ajith, Vikram and Vijay for the Kollywood version, he says, “the film will sure become a super hit here if the three come forward to join forces. The top actors would fit to the roles well besides adding star value to the movie.”

Draw his attention to the fact that he is not acting in Tamil films of late, Madhavan says, “that is my mistake. Since I delivered few flops, I wanted to take a break and concentrated on Hindi movies. But I am making a comeback with Kamal sir’s next venture.”

CM launches scheme for directors

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday launched a scheme for payment of salaries to film directors and assistant directors through Tamil Film Directors Association.

The scheme was inaugurated at the Secretariat in the presence of the Directors Association President Bharathiraja, secretary R K Selvamani, vice president Vikraman and other office bearers.

Launching the scheme, the Chief Minister distributed salaries to 24 directors and assistant directors, working in the seven films. Among those who were paid their salaries include director of ‘Pen Singam’ (which has script by Karunanidhi) Bali director Srirangam and his assistants, ‘Thiruthani’ director Perarasu and his team, ‘Mappillai’ director Suraaj and his associates and ‘Seedan’ director Subramaniam Siva and his men.

As per the new scheme, producers can not directly pay directors and assistant directors. They can draw their payments only through the association. This move would regularise the salaries of assistant directors, it is felt.

No item girl I am: Anuya

Anuya, who made her debut as heroine opposite Jeeva in ‘Siva Mansula Sakthi’, appears for a special song in ‘Nanjupuram’, a film starring popular small screen actor Raghav in the lead role. The song was recently shot at a factory near Guindy.

Happy to part of the song, Anuya says, “It was not a glamourous item number. Rather it was a song that outlines the story of the movie. So don’t call me an item girl.” The actress however says she is ready for double-heroine roles provided there is enough importance to her character.

“Even my second film ‘Madurai Sambavam’ had two actresses in lead roles including me. But my character managed to hog the attention. This is what I expect out of my film career,” she says.

Interestingly, Raghav, who plays the lead role along with Monica in ‘Nanjupuram’, is also composing the music.

Sameera in love with Kerala

After she started working opposite Mohanlal in T.K. Rajeevkumar's film ‘Oru Naal Varum’, Sameera Reddy has literally fallen in love with God’s own country. Sameera says Kerala is a breath-taking place. The greenery, the back waters and particularly the food -Appams and payaru payasam top the list and then comes puttu- Sameera loves everything Kerala.

Sameera thanks Priyadarshan for being in Mollywood. One day Priyan called her and asked her if she knows somebody called Srinivasan. After she went blank Priyan only continued and told her, well you will know him soon because you are working in a film scripted by him, it was so quick recollects Sameera.

Sameera is already a popular face in Kerala through Tamil films ‘Varanam Aayiram’ and ‘Asal’. Sameera is also cast in another Malayalam film Casanova again with Mohanlal. Tamil actor Arya also plays an important role in ‘Casanova’.

So after doing films in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam, will Kannada be the next touch down? May be she says. “As far as I am concerned it’s all cinema and languages don’t matter”, she says. Her mother is a Kannadiga and at least for her Sameera will sign a Kannada film in the future.

Suriya’s film will shine: Udhayanidhi

Hopes are high for Udhayanidhi Stalin, who has joined hands with Suriya for the second time. The ‘Aadhavan’ producer says the movie to be directed by A R Murugadoss would set new standards in Tamil cinema.

“We are bringing ace cinematographer Ravi K Chandran to Kollywood again with this film. He is so humble and down to earth even after a lot of achievements to his credit. Murugadoss’s hardwork to polish the script was remarkable,” the young producer says.

He adds: “Shooting will commence soon and plans are on to release the film by the end of this year. Harris Jayaraj is busy composing tunes. On the whole, I am happy to work with Suriya, Murugadoss, Ravi K Chandran and Harris Jayaraj.”

On his other production venture which would have Kamal Haasan in the lead, Udhayanidhi says, “Kamal sir took me to the discussion room where I was stunned by his knowledge. He is a master of all subjects. We discussed for about 10 times so far. An official announcement will be made soon.”

Three releases tomorrow

Tamil movies are aplenty this month and especially tomorrow where the audience will see three releases.

Nanda Periyasam’s ‘Mathiyosi’, ‘Azhagana Ponnuthan’ by Thiru and ‘Yathumagi’ by Balakumar release this Friday, that’s tomorrow. Incidentally all the movies have new comers except for ‘Yathumagi’ that has the beautiful Sunaina as the heroine.

‘Azhagana Ponnuthan’ and ‘Yathumagi’ are directed by new comers Thiru and Balakumar respectively. Balakumar who is an assistant of K.Bhagyaraj, is reportedly working on another project even before his first movie is releasing. His next project would be ‘Seetharaman’.

Nanda Periyasami is making a come back after ‘Oru Kallooriyin Kadhai’ that had Arya and Sonia Agarwal, unfortunately the movie was unnoticed. He would hope to revive his career with ‘Mathiyosi’ with new comers.

It’s an interesting tale of four vagrants from a rustic village in Madurai, Onaan, Manga, Mari and Pandi who start their crook business from stealing a hen and then escape to the city to be happy until a girl comes into their lives changes all their plans. The newcomers in the film are Harish, Alex, Gopal and Vishak as heroes and Shammu is in the female lead.

People in the trade are hoping that these youthful stories will strike a chord with the viewers and help to continue the upward swing in Kollywood. IndiaGlitz wishes all the producers, directors and actors part of these projects the very best!

Vadivelu plans to launch his son

Vaigai Puyal Vadivelu who is still sorting out his problems with fellow comedian Singamuthu is silently working for the launch of his son as an actor.

Vadivelu is said to have approached the ‘Renigunta’ director Paneer Selvam to create a perfect launch pad for his son Subramani. Interesting is that Vadivelu is okay with his son being launched as a second hero.

Paneer Selvam who is now busy in Tollywood will come back to Kollywood in August to direct a film with Jeeva in the lead. News is that Vadivelu’s son may be introduced in the same film as the second hero.

Prabhu Deva dances with Sudaram and Raju

We know that veteran Sundaram master is donning a full fledged role as an actor for the first time in 'Pa, Ra. Palanichamy'. The film is produced and directed by P. Thangavel who is also the hero of the film. Sundaram master who is a veteran in cinema with over 1000 movies as a choreographer is playing the important role in the film.

Recently a song was pictures on Sundaram master and you know who danced with him in the song? It was his prodigy sons Prabhu Deva and Raju Sundaram.

When Prabhu Deva listened to the song 'Netru Adhu unakku... Indtru Adhu Enakku... Naalai Adhu Yarukku Theriyuma...' tuned by Dhina he himself suggested the song would look nice if he and his brother danced with Sundaranm master.

So the director got the jackpot of three greats performing in the same song. An interesting fact is that the choreographer for this particular song was Sridhar and not one of the greats who featured.

'Pa, Ra. Palanichamy' is a social drama about a man who wanted to live with utmost human values but changes his path to the contrary after seeing and experiencing the bitter world. The story explores his mind and the reasons for his change.

The young romantic pair in the film is Srinivan and Meenatchi. Ahina is the music director. Aswin, Alex, Paandu, Karathe Raja are also in the cast.

Mithran is going for a remake of another Telugu film ‘Ready’ this time and he is also repeating his lucky hero Dhanush for the third time in this film as well.

The film has been titled 'Uthamaputhiran' and Genelia who did the Telugu original plays the same role in Tamil also. ‘Uthamaputhiran’ will be a action-comedy-romance which will enhance itself in the hands of Dhanush.

Is Pooja there in ‘Avan Ivan’?

Rumour mills are working overtime in Kollywood saying Bala has roped in his ‘Naan Kadavul’ actress Pooja for his forthcoming venture ‘Avan Ivan’, which has Vishal and Arya in lead roles.

However, the actress is quick to deny it and says, “I have not been approached by Bala sir till now. There is no truth in reports that I am there in ‘Avan Ivan’.” Circles close to Pooja say she would however accept the offer if Bala wants her to be the part of the project.

“Because, ‘Naan Kadavul’ has established Pooja as a talented actress. Though she has acted in many films in Tamil, it was the Bala’s movie which earned her name and fame. So she is interested to work with Bala again,” they say.

Interestingly, ‘Avan Ivan’ would be the fifth film for Arya and Pooja together if she is roped in for the film produced by Kalpathi S Agoram. Their earlier films were are ‘Ullam Ketkume’, ‘Pattiyal’, ‘Oram Po’ and ‘Naan Kadavul’.

Sneha with Sarath Kumar

Sneha who is expecting ‘Bhavani IPS’ to reveal another facet of her acting prowess is happy to re-enter Malayalam. Sneha has been signed for a Malayalam film opposite Mohanlal.

Sneha who has acted with all the heroes young and old, beginners and super stars however was not paired with Supreme Star Sarath Kumar till date. Now even that is happening. Sarath Kumar and Sneha are coming together in the film ‘Vidiyal’ which is rumored to be a production of Radha Ravi. For the glamour side there is Shruthi Prakash.

Sneha has not paired with the Super Star also. But that’s a different story. It may be recalled Sneha was approached to play Nayantara’s role in ‘Chandramukhi’ but the self respecting Sneha did not accept the offer because the role wasn’t the main female role in the film. We are still waiting to see Sneha pairing with the Super Star.

Titled 'Pandiya Perarasi', the movie would revolve between ancient and contemporary worlds, according to sources. "The script is unique and the filmmaker is confident of bouncing back in a big way," they say.

Jeeva not bothered about IPL

Simbu sings for pocket money

Little Superstar Silamabarasan is slowly becoming a regular play back singer apart from his acting and directing. Simbu started singing professionally only for his films but his unique voice had so many takers later.

Recently silambarasan crooned a song for Jayam Ravi for the film Thillalangadi. Simbu’s best friend Yuvan Shankar Raja tuned the lyric of Na. Muthukumar.

The number ‘Pattu Pattu Pattam Poochi…’ needed a Simbu kind of voice and hence the director Raja called for Simbu. It was a spontaneous decision of Raja and Yuvan immediately endorsed it.

So why is Simbu of late taking many offers to sing for other actors? Simbu says” I give all my film earnings to my mother and take money from her whenever I need. But When I sing for others the money I get is extra and that is my pocket money”. Smart Silambarasan. Smart decision.

Shriya pays fine of 5 lakhs

Many times it happens in Kollywood that actors sign a film, take an advance and then delay giving dates. This drama is a nightmare to most of the producers. Even if the actors later decide not to do a particular film getting the already paid advance back is nothing less than an ordeal for the producers.

But Kathiresan who produced 'Pollathavan' was not the one to take it lying down. After ‘Pollathavan’ film Kathiresan signed Shriya for a film and paid her an advance of ten lakhs. But Shriya was not in the position to do the film and so delayed giving dates. Kathiresan waited for long to get alt least the advance money back from Shriya. After much struggle he took his case to Producers Council. Then after hearing both sides Shriya was asked to pay the advance of 10 lakhs along with a fine of 5 lakhs to the producer

Paiyaa on April 2

One of the most expected movies of this year ‘Paiyaa’ has announced its release date. The film which was to have hit the screens in February is finally releasing on April 2.

‘Paiyaa’ is produced and directed by Lingusamy for his home banner Tirupathi Brothers. The film has Karthi and Tamannah in the lead and Bollywood actor Milind Soman plays a key role. Music by Yuvanshankar Raja is already on top of the charts. Paiyaa is a road adventure film with some scintillating action sequences.

Recently Paiyaa became a high profile film as Dayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud 9 Movies acquired the film for distribution. As the year so far has not been good for the film industry all eyes are on Paiyaa for the reversal of fortunes at the box office.
